Bryan briefing cites federal meetings, hospital contract and police consent-decree compliance

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. used a Government House briefing on March 2, 2026, to outline meetings in Washington, Phoenix and Jacksonville and to provide updates on infrastructure, health care and public safety matters.

Government House said Bryan attended the 2026 Senior Plenary Session of the Interagency Group on Insular Areas at the U.S. Department of the Interior and the National Governors Association winter meeting in Washington. It said he also met with White House officials on federal priorities for the territory.

In Phoenix, Bryan met with Arizona State University leadership on a partnership related to renewable energy expansion in the Virgin Islands, according to Government House.

In Jacksonville, he met with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on permitting issues involving several projects, including Veterans Drive Phase II on St. Thomas and the Summer's End marina project on St. John. Government House said the marina permit application, first submitted in 2004, was about 97% complete and that the Corps had committed to a final decision by April 2026.

Bryan also said the Virgin Islands government executed a contract during the previous week with Suffolk Construction Co. for the preconstruction phase of the Juan F. Luis Hospital rebuilding project. Government House said the project was expected to take about five years and that demolition was anticipated before the end of 2026.

The governor said the Virgin Islands Police Department had met compliance standards under the federal consent decree tied to a 2008 U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit and a 2009 court order.

During the briefing, Bryan also congratulated the V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Firefighter and EMT Recruit Class of 2025-01 from the St. Thomas-St. John District and recognized Virgin Islands Port Authority Chief Wharfinger Waynia Charles, Police Officer Karima Liburd, Community Service Officer Amoy Fredericks, VIPA Dock Master Devante Edwards and the crew of the SV Juliet for their response after a cruise passenger fell into the water at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility in Frederiksted.
