WAPA names 2025 Alva McFarlane Scholarship recipients

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority announced on May 23, 2025, that Joshua Calcano and Daniel Newton were selected as the 2025 recipients of the Alva McFarlane Scholarship.

WAPA said Calcano, a graduate of St. Croix Educational Complex, was a sophomore engineering student at the University of the Virgin Islands. The authority said he was focused on renewable energy and environmental conservation and aimed to develop water and power solutions for island communities.

WAPA said Newton, a graduate of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, was pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Florida. The authority said he planned to work in sustainable and clean technology.

According to the announcement, the scholarship is named for Alva C. McFarlane and is intended to support education and STEM-related career development.
