Bryan issues May proclamations for Memorial Day, Safe Boating Week and Carmen Rodriguez
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued three proclamations for May 2025 recognizing Memorial Day, National Safe Boating Week and the career of Carmen Rodriguez.
Bryan proclaimed May 26, 2025, as Memorial Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands and encouraged residents and civic, patriotic and educational organizations to hold observances. The proclamation also directed that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon and then raised to full-staff until sunset.
He also proclaimed May 17 through May 23, 2025, as National Safe Boating Week in the territory. The proclamation said boating-related deaths are often preventable and urged boaters to practice safe boating, including wearing life jackets.
Bryan further proclaimed May 20, 2025, as the Observance of the Career of Carmen Rodriguez. Government House said Rodriguez, a 1989 graduate of St. Joseph High School on St. Croix, began her public service career in 1990 with the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration and received awards including Employee of the Year in 1993 and 2015, the Secretary’s Exceptional Achievement Award in 2018, and the Rico Barrasso Excellence in Public Service Award in 2018.
According to the proclamation announcement, Rodriguez also provided assistance to the Virgin Islands Department of Labor after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
