Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. announced on Oct. 16 a weekend of public events to mark the 51st U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands Friendship Day.

The observance was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Emancipation Garden in Charlotte Amalie with a cultural program featuring music, dance, storytelling and other performances and presentations.

Events were set to continue on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Mark C. Marin Center at Antilles School, where the U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands men's national basketball teams were scheduled to play a friendly game. Tipoff was set for 1 p.m.

Government House said the events were free and open to the public, with food and drinks available for purchase.

According to the announcement, USVI-BVI Friendship Day was established in the early 1970s to recognize shared history, culture, commerce and family connections between the two territories.
