Bryan proclaims Nov. 13 as William S. Harvey Jr. Day in the Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. proclaimed Nov. 13, 2024, as William S. Harvey Jr. Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to a Government House announcement published that day.

Harvey served in the 13th, 14th and 15th Legislatures from 1979 to 1985 and led the Virgin Islands Emergency Management Agency from 1985 to 1991. He died in 2008 at age 80.

Born in New York and raised on St. Croix, Harvey graduated from Christiansted High School, served in the U.S. Army and studied journalism at New York University. He worked in advertising, journalism and government and hosted a weekly television talk show.

After retiring in 1993, Harvey moved to Deltona, Fla., where he served on local committees and boards. He was president of the African-American Association of Deltona, was elected to the Deltona City Commission in 1999 and served two terms. In 2007, he was appointed vice mayor of Deltona.
