FEMA Obligated $989 Million for St. Croix Wastewater System Upgrades
The Federal Emergency Management Agency obligated $989 million for wastewater system improvements on St. Croix, Government House said on July 19, 2024.
According to the release, the funding will support a comprehensive overhaul of most of St. Croix’s wastewater sewer lines and the reconstruction of 14 pump stations. The work is intended to address damage from Hurricane Maria.
Government House said the project was enabled by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 and is intended to strengthen infrastructure damaged during Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.
The release said FEMA had allocated $11.9 billion through its Public Assistance program for emergency and permanent repairs to infrastructure damaged in the 2017 storms, including about $1.2 billion for hazard-mitigation measures.
