Government reaches wage agreement with AFT locals covering teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff

Government House said on September 17, 2024, that the Virgin Islands government reached a two-year wage agreement with American Federation of Teachers Locals 1825 and 1826 covering teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff.

The agreement was retroactive to September 1, 2023, and runs through August 31, 2025. Under its terms, teachers were to receive a 4% salary increase in the first year and a 3% increase in the second year.

Government House said the starting salary for teachers with a bachelor’s degree would rise to $50,974.12 in the first year and $52,503.35 in the second year. It said paraprofessionals and support staff also would receive structured wage increases.

The government and the two AFT locals also agreed to reopen wage talks and negotiate a successor agreement for the period from September 1, 2025, through August 30, 2028, according to the statement.
