Bryan warned Middle East crisis could raise energy costs in U.S. Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on March 4, 2026, that escalating conflict in the Middle East could affect U.S. service members in the region and increase energy costs in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In a statement, Bryan said the territory remained heavily dependent on imported fuel for electricity generation and that instability in global oil markets could translate into higher fuel costs and electricity rates for residents and businesses.

He said the Virgin Islands government did not have the same financial capacity it once had to subsidize electricity costs at high levels, and that a sustained increase in oil prices could put pressure on the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority and on consumer rates.

Bryan said his administration was monitoring international developments and was in contact with local energy officials to assess potential effects and consider mitigation strategies.
