WAPA said battery storage installation was completed as Wärtsilä Phase 2 work resumed at Randolph Harley plant
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on July 24, 2024, that work had resumed on the Wärtsilä Phase 2 new-generation project at the Randolph Harley Power Plant on St. Thomas and that installation of the final battery module for the plant’s Battery Energy Storage System had been completed.
WAPA said the next steps included testing and commissioning the battery storage system, finalizing light fuel oil commissioning, continuing liquefied petroleum gas interconnection work, and completing final commissioning of the plant.
The authority said it would begin finalizing light fuel oil commissioning on July 27, 2024, and that the work could cause unplanned electrical outages in the St. Thomas-St. John district lasting about 30 minutes. WAPA said outages could last longer without advance notice if the plant experienced an unforeseen loss or reduction in generating capacity.
After commissioning work is completed, WAPA said it planned to conduct load and performance tests on the plant.
