Mercedes' George Russell fastest in Italian GP second practice

George Russell needs a good weekend and, well, so far so good.

He topped the charts in FP2 and has looked in decent nick today.

But with the Tifosi roaring Ferrari - and his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli - on, can he keep up the momentum into tomorrow?

We'll be back from 11:15 BST tomorrow shortly before third practice with qualifying also on the agenda on Saturday.

It's going to be a thriller. George Russell should have pole in the bag but I think it's going to be a tricky weekend with issues with traffic in qualifying. The race is up for grabs.

And that's yer lot for FP2.

The times came tumbling down and there was an altogether more reserved finish to the session than some of the fast-paced action we had earlier on.

Mercedes set the pace but Ferrari and McLaren don't look an awful lot further behind them on today's evidence.

George Russell went fastest in FP2 with his 1:22.559 but Charles Leclerc kept in touching distance.

"The car is jumping a lot more now. I don't know if the the ride took a hit again, on the front axle. Already the car is jumping."

Less than five minutes on the clock and the top five's the same as it was in the entry I posted at 15:43.

Does anyone fancy a late dash to the line?

Gabriel Bortoleto is brought into the pits with some issues with his Audi.

That's not good, he's taken a new engine for this weekend.

Charles Leclerc's on a flier and spins his Ferrari headed into the second chicane.

He avoids going into the barrier but his tyres take a dip into the gravel as he comes out.

A heart in mouth moment, there.

Just 10 minutes left now and George Russell's 1:22.559 is the time to beat.

He's just over a tenth better off than second-placed Charles Leclerc right now.

Ollie Bearman has a new Ferrari power unit in his Haas. He's eighth fastest as things stand.

His team-mate Esteban Ocon in 10 places down in 18th.

There's quite a lull in proceedings now if I'm being honest.

Not a lot of on-track action to report, I'm afraid.

The top five is very much as you were and there's little change down the pecking order.

Kimi Antonelli's lead is 59 points at the moment and that is the season's biggest gap. Antonelli will be starting at the back here and. If George Russell doesn't capitalise here, where does he? He's got to do it here.

Lewis Hamilton comes in for a wing adjustment and, on his return to the track, immediately locks up headed into turn one and has to take the run-off.

Meanwhile George Russell goes fastest again, this time with a 1:22.559.

Every driver other than Kimi Antonelli - who's got a set of hards on - is using the soft tyre now.

F1 has announced that it will host a three-day event for fans before next season in Milan on 18-20 February.

A successor to the F1 Live event in London’s O2 in 2025, it will feature all 11 teams and their drivers as well as music and entertainment.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali said: “We are always thinking big and pushing boundaries, and F1 Live Milan is going to be an incredible experience created with our fans at its heart.

“We want them to feel that they are not simply watching the sport, but they are truly immersed in it.
