Bryan administration began distributing retroactive wage payments on May 16
The Bryan administration said on May 20 that it had begun distributing retroactive wage checks to current and former Virgin Islands government employees.
According to Government House, several hundred people received payments on May 16, the start of a $22.5 million disbursement expected to benefit more than 8,000 employees and retirees. The administration said payments would continue through May 30.
Government House said Act 6984 created the Retroactive Wage Commission to determine amounts owed to nearly 11,000 active and former government employees and retirees who served between 1990 and 2001. It said the total obligation exceeded $225 million.
The administration said it had paid more than $44 million toward that obligation and that 144 people had already received their full payout.
Under the latest disbursement, Government House said individuals owed $2,500 or less would receive full payments, affecting an estimated 2,030 people. Those owed more than $2,500 were to receive partial payments equal to 14% of the amount owed.
