Virgin Islands receives $100 million HUD grant for fuel storage acquisition
Government House said on July 16, 2024, that the U.S. Virgin Islands had received approval for $100 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation program.
According to the administration, the money was allocated for the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority to acquire fuel storage infrastructure on St. Thomas and St. Croix from VITOL.
Government House said the grant would support VIWAPA's plan to acquire the facilities as part of efforts to improve the reliability and cost-effectiveness of energy delivery.
The administration said the funding was tied to the territory's recovery and rebuilding efforts following hurricanes. HUD administers the CDBG-MIT program for states and territories affected by natural disasters to support mitigation and resilience projects.
