Bryan marks 147th anniversary of Contract Day in statement

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a statement on September 30, 2025, marking the 147th anniversary of Contract Day.

In the statement, Bryan said the observance honored Mary "Queen Mary" Thomas, Mathilda "Queen Mathilda" McBean and Axelline "Queen Agnes" Salomon, who he said stood against the labor system in the Danish West Indies on October 1, 1878. He also named Susanna "Bottom Belly" Abrahamson and Rebecca Frederik.

Bryan said Contract Day commemorates the laborers' resistance to the Labor Act of 1849 and the uprising known as Fireburn on St. Croix.
