The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on September 25, 2024, that Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas would receive a backup battery system funded through a grant from the U.S. Office of Insular Affairs.
WAPA said the project called for installation of a four-hour, 2-megawatt battery energy storage system at the hospital. The authority said the system was intended to support hospital operations during natural disasters and other electrical interruptions and help protect sensitive medical equipment from power disruptions.
WAPA also said it had secured Office of Insular Affairs grant funding to acquire electric vehicles for its fleet, including bucket trucks, line department vehicles and additional vehicles for meter-reading crews.
