The father of a teenager in Thailand said his son is “guilty” of carrying out a school shooting north of Bangkok, but he doesn’t know his son’s motive.

Thailand’s prime minister said that the shooting could have been much worse. Officials gave a revised death toll, saying five teachers — but no students — were killed in the attack. The suspect’s two grandparents were killed prior to the school shooting.

Revised death toll: The country’s prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, said in an update Friday that alongside the five teachers, the suspect’s two grandparents were also killed at their house. Officials had originally given a death toll that included three students as well as three teachers and the suspect’s grandparents.

School stress: The suspect appeared to have been experiencing stress related to his studies, but Anutin did not draw any firm conclusions about potential motives behind the attack. “We have learned from interviews with one of his close friends that he had been under stress and had complained about pressure over his studies,” he told reporters.

Father’s comments: The suspect’s father, who CNN is not naming until the authorities identify his son, said his son had a “good school result.” He also said he hadn’t seen “any sign of violence from my son,” adding that the boy’s hobbies included soccer, video gaming and playing with his pet birds. “I still haven’t seen the face of my late son yet,” the father concluded.

Internet search history: The suspected gunman searched for and viewed websites related to mass shootings before the incident, police said.

Gun ownership: Thailand has more firearms per person than most other countries in Southeast Asia, and it has the second-highest number of gun homicides in the region. Anutin vowed on Friday to strengthen school security measures and introduce more screenings for firearms.

Temporary closure: There is a “really sad atmosphere” at the school, as parents attempt to comfort their children, one parent said. Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where the shooting took place, has been temporarily closed, according to Thailand’s Education Ministry.

Financial compensation: Thai authorities pledged financial compensation to the victims’ families, including 20,000 Thai Baht (USD $600) for each victim who lost their life, and 5,000 Thai Baht (USD $150) for each person who sustained injuries.

Gunman’s age: UNICEF called for better mental health services for children following the attack, particularly given the young age of the suspected shooter, who was 14 years old. “This raises particularly difficult questions for us as a society,” UNICEF said in a statement.
