The U.S. military attacked Iran early Wednesday after it said Tehran struck three ships in the Strait of Hormuz, part of an American effort that also revoked the Islamic Republic’s ability to openly sell crude oil in the world market.

Mourners dressed in black gathered just south of Qom in Iran for a for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral service, with throngs of people surrounding the truck carrying his coffin. The mosque is believed by Shiites to have once hosted Muhammad al-Mahdi, the 12th and last Shiite imam, who disappeared in the 9th century and will one day reappear to bring justice to the world.
