The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on November 19, 2024, that it was working with an outside contractor to repair two underground cable faults that caused weekend power outages in downtown Christiansted on St. Croix.

WAPA said the outages primarily affected customers on King Street, Company Street, Queen Street and Hill Street. The authority said excessive rainfall during the previous week flooded manholes and submerged underground power lines, causing the failures.

Most affected customers had service restored by 8 p.m. on November 18, 2024, according to WAPA. St. Mary’s School remained without power on November 19, 2024, as crews continued repairs to an underground transformer.

WAPA said the work was delayed by the need to pump water from manholes before repairs could be made safely and by shortages of needed materials. Crews from WAPA and its contractor began work on November 17, 2024, and continued efforts to restore service to the school.
