Bryan says Virgin Islands National Guard was released from federal oversight program

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during a weekly briefing on St. John on Sept. 23, 2024, that the Virgin Islands Army National Guard had been released from the National Guard Bureau Army Assisted Office Program effective Sept. 12, 2024.

Adjutant General Kodjo Knox-Limbacker said the program began after an investigation identified 167 action areas involving governance and operational readiness. He said 140 of those items had been addressed.

The briefing was held at the Battery in Cruz Bay after Bryan toured the newly constructed HeadStart center in Cruz Bay. Bryan said the facility was one of six HeadStart and support facilities in various stages of construction across the territory and the only HeadStart facility on St. John.

VITEMA Director Daryl Jaschen said a tropical storm moving toward the Gulf of Mexico was not expected to directly affect the U.S. Virgin Islands. He also said a heat advisory was in effect and urged residents, particularly on St. Croix, to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including headaches, nausea, extreme thirst and heavy sweating.

Jaschen also encouraged residents to sign up for AlertVI emergency notifications as Hurricane Preparedness Month neared its end.
