WAPA restored St. Thomas-St. John feeders after emergency repairs to Unit 23
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said it restored service to all feeders in the St. Thomas-St. John district on March 6, 2025, after Unit 23 was taken out of service that morning for emergency repairs.
WAPA said the problem stemmed from a brief outage on February 28, when Unit 23 experienced significant vibration that caused fractures in its fuel lines. Plant personnel worked through the early hours and over the weekend to address the damage while keeping the unit online, but one fracture required the unit to be removed from service on March 5 for repairs.
According to WAPA, crews repaired the fuel line and returned Unit 23 to operation at about 8:35 p.m. on March 5, restoring service to affected customers.
The authority also said it was addressing deferred maintenance on legacy units, including Unit 27, and was expediting parts shipments for its Wartsila units.
