Bryan asked Senate president to seek union testimony on lawmakers’ pension and salary practice

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. asked Senate President Milton Potter in a July 28, 2025, letter to invite major union leaders to testify before the 36th Legislature on the practice of sitting senators receiving a government pension and a legislative salary while also accruing a second pension.

Government House said Bryan asked that the presidents of the American Federation of Teachers, United Steelworkers, Seafarers International Union and the Virgin Islands Central Labor Council, among others, be invited to testify on behalf of their members.

According to the statement, Bryan said the testimony would address how the practice affects public employees’ trust in the government and the Government Employees’ Retirement System. He said the practice may be legally permitted but should be subject to public scrutiny.
