Four Virgin Islands students recognized for FCCA essay competition honors

Four Virgin Islands students were recognized at Lockhart K-8 School on November 19, 2024, for their results in an international essay competition sponsored by the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association, according to Government House.

The event honored Rachell Guzman Ramirez, who placed first in the senior division; Tyler Ian Antonio Chung, who placed second in the junior division; senior division participant Nafiah Yarborough; and junior division participant J’Quan Walwyn.

FCCA Chief Executive Officer Michele M. Paige said the students’ essays were judged the best among entries from the Caribbean region, Central America, 30 U.S. states and Mexico. Paige presented Lockhart K-8 School with a $10,000 check and said FCCA would fund a school celebration.

Government House said the first-place winners received laptops. The Office of the Governor also presented checks of $750 to the first-place winners and $250 to each of the other students recognized.
