Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day events were scheduled for St. Croix and St. Thomas

Government House said Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day events were scheduled for St. Croix and St. Thomas in October 2024 as the territory marked the 60th anniversary of the observance.

According to the announcement, the Virgin Islands Legislature approved Bill 2019, Act No. 1075, on Jan. 20, 1964, designating Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day.

The VI/PR Friendship Committee said the 60th anniversary celebration was set for Oct. 10-13, 2024, culminating with the VIPR Village at the St. Croix Agricultural Grounds.

The announcement said the events began on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, with a gospel night at Sol De Justicia, Iglesia De Dios in Estate Carlton on St. Croix.

On St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Committee and the Office of the Governor scheduled "A Musical Embrace," a 90-minute concert, for 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, at Prior Jollek Hall on the Antilles School campus.

Government House said the concert would feature the Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Chamber Orchestra and be co-hosted by the Antilles School Band and 309 Live. Dr. Leroy Trotman was scheduled to provide interpretive narratives, and Gylchris Sprauve was set to conduct.

The listed performers included flutist Gerald Walters, saxophonists Sherwein Williams and Shecoy Jones, trombonist Urbane Chinnery, and percussionists Eljhaie Brathwaite and Carlton Rogers. Admission was free, according to the announcement.
