Getting more steps in every day sounds simple — until you realize you've been sitting at your desk for hours, it's 5 p.m., and you've only logged 2,000 steps.

User notparishilton on Reddit asked, "How do you get steps in everyday?"

Note: Some responses are also from this Reddit thread.

"I've started dancing to add steps and get a fun workout in. I love it because when I really go for it, I can easily add thousands of steps by dancing for an hour. Plus, I can do it from home with nothing but my headphones and a fun playlist. There are lots of dance workout videos on YouTube for anyone who wants to try it but doesn't know where to start. Personally, I just do my own thing and flail around like a weirdo. It's fun and can even be pretty cathartic if you pick music that fits your mood."

"I got a stepper recently. It's a little harder than just walking, but I just count it as walking. I get on it for half an hour to an hour every evening while reading or watching TV."

"I recently invested in a walking treadmill under my desk at work and am trying to form habits to do three 20-minute increments throughout the day. I'm still trying to figure out which tasks can be done while walking, but I think it will be great to have during winter, as without it, my steps can be low some days."

"I set my alarm to go off every hour during the weekdays and take a walk around my block. By the end of the day, I'm almost at 10,000 steps, and it feels like zero effort. It gets me away from my desk and computer on a regular basis."

"I walk part of my commute. I just go on foot to the next tram stop or two. Just a few minutes of walking gets me to 5,000 steps, which is my daily goal."

"I got a dog and am forced to get a couple thousand steps in just for her. But it's making me enjoy walking in general, because I get to explore the outdoors with her every day."

"I have a treadmill with a TV in front of it, and I watch shows on Netflix or Hulu or whatever. It's amazing how a good show will distract you from the t"me."

"I love 'Get Fit With Rick' on YouTube! It's an indoor walking workout series that is so fun!"

"I now walk 10-25 minutes after each meal. I'm lucky that I work from home and can fit this into my schedule more easily than most."

"I get more steps in by doing inefficient housecleaning — multiple trips up and down the stairs add up quickly."

"I have the privilege of living in a pedestrian-centric city, and I get a lot of steps just running from A to B because I have the option of not having a car. But building socialization and hobbies around it can be really helpful."

"I park as far away as I can from a store entrance. It’s small, but the steps add up."

"I rage walk on the treadmill, screaming along to some of Taylor Swift's angrier songs."

"I work an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. office job, and I'm currently on a 45-day streak of walking 10,000-plus steps daily. The way I do it is I make sure I get 1,000 steps every hour, starting at 7 a.m. By 5 p.m, I'm at 10,000. Anything after is extra."

"I get up every hour when I can to use the restroom, stretch, etc. And after my gym session, I walk on the treadmill for 10-15 minutes."

"I've found listening to an interesting podcast or audiobook has made me more willing to walk as opposed to listening to music (or nothing)."

"When I work out in the gym, I do laps during my rest periods between sets. It's like free time for extra steps."

"I make my daily tasks more efficient. At work, I walk to the back for everything I could possibly need. I walk to the printer for each print job instead of waiting to have enough to make it worth it. When I pick up at home, I move one item at a time. I always park at the back of the lot."

"It may sound silly, but I lap around my hallway when I look at Reddit in the morning. It turned my phone scrolling into a somewhat productive habit. The phone distracts me from even realizing that I'm walking."

"There have been many times I've reached my elevation goal on my Garmin simply by forgetting things so many times while going between floors in the house."

"I take public transport, so on the days I go to work, I'll easily do like 6,000 steps without trying."

"I averaged 14,000 steps last month, and I literally just walk around my college campus."

"I go on a walk in my neighborhood when I get off work. There are about 2,000 steps in a mile. I take a couple laps around where I live, and I'm good."
