ADA office scheduled preparedness expos for seniors and people with disabilities on St. Thomas and St. Croix

The Virgin Islands Governor’s Americans with Disabilities Act Office said it scheduled two territorywide preparedness expos for seniors and people with disabilities in July 2024.

The first event was set for July 9, 2024, at the Elridge W. Blake Sports & Fitness Center on the University of the Virgin Islands’ Orville E. Kean campus for St. Thomas and St. John residents. A second event was scheduled for July 16, 2024, at the gymnasium of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School campus. Both expos were set to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with sign-in and limited registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.

According to Government House, the expos were to focus on health and disaster preparedness, including information on emergency supply bags, registration for services such as VI Alerts, WAPA alerts and VITRAN paratransit, health screenings, vaccinations, and guidance on securing medication and equipment before, during and after disasters.

Government House said the events also were to include presentations and question-and-answer sessions on assistive devices, fraud awareness, housing assistance, banking and financial assistance, legal services and employment.

Participating organizations included the USVI Disability Network Partners, the Department of Health’s Public Health Preparedness program, the American Red Cross of the Virgin Islands and FEMA, along with other public and private agencies and organizations.

Government House directed residents to register through the ADA Office website and said a livestream would be made available online for people unable to attend in person.
