The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said it hosted more than 25 students from the Caribbean Center for Boys and Girls of the Virgin Islands summer camp at the Hogensborg Solar Farm on St. Croix on July 8, 2025.

WAPA described Hogensborg as St. Croix’s largest solar facility. According to the authority, campers ages 5 to 12 were shown how electricity is generated from 48,210 solar panels and how a battery energy storage system can supply power when sunlight is limited or unavailable.

The visit also included a hands-on activity in which students built solar ovens from pizza boxes with assistance from WAPA engineers and engineering interns, according to the authority.

In the release, CCBGVI teacher Takesia Martinez-Ortiz said the goal was to introduce campers to renewable energy, sustainability practices and innovation related to the territory’s energy needs.
