Bryan says Ghana meetings focused on trade, tourism and proposed fiber link

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on Dec. 2, 2025, that a weeklong economic mission to Ghana included meetings with President John Dramani Mahama and other officials focused on trade, digital connectivity and economic development for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Government House said Bryan met Mahama in Accra on Nov. 29, 2025. The administration said their discussions included the potential role of St. Croix’s Free Trade Zone in trade between Ghana and the United States.

During the trip, Bryan and members of a Virgin Islands delegation toured the Port of Tema and received briefings on port operations, logistics planning and regional trade movement, according to Government House.

The administration said Bryan also met with leaders from African financial institutions, tourism officials and representatives of the Ghana Free Trade Zone to discuss investment, business expansion and possible links between the Virgin Islands and African travel and commerce sectors.

Government House said Bryan and Mahama also discussed the proposed Diaspora Link project, a transatlantic fiber-optic cable that would connect Ghana, the Virgin Islands and the U.S. mainland. The administration said the project was under consideration by Congress for possible federal funding.

According to Government House, Mahama expressed interest in continuing the partnership and in sending an official delegation to the Virgin Islands in the first quarter of 2026 to discuss trade, investment planning, cultural cooperation and the Diaspora Link project.
