Government House said $5 million in tax refunds would be issued to 1,745 Virgin Islands taxpayers
Government House said on July 29, 2024, that about $5 million in tax refunds would be issued that week to 1,745 taxpayers in the U.S. Virgin Islands who filed income tax returns by May 19, 2022.
The announcement was made during the weekly Government House briefing on St. Croix by Communications Director Richard Motta.
During the briefing, VITEMA Director Daryl Jaschen said a tropical depression was forecast to approach the territory by the end of that week. He said sandbag distribution had taken place the previous week and over the weekend, and that residents could continue to obtain up to six sandbags per residence.
Government House also said the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources had secured a $69 million grant through the Climate Resilience Regional Challenge.
Motta also announced that Kevin A. Williams Sr. had been appointed chief of staff, succeeding Karl Knight, and that Finance Commissioner Kevin McCurdy would serve as incident commander for the energy state of emergency.
In addition, Government House said the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee, the State Historic Preservation Office and the Friends of Denmark planned a July 31, 2024, ceremony to reinter Anna Heegaard's remains at the family plot in Aldershvile Cemetery in Estate Orange Grove.
Motta also urged motorists on St. Croix to slow down on Queen Mary Highway near the newly constructed bridge west of Superior Court.
