WAPA started 48-hour reliability test for four new Wärtsilä units at Randolph Harley plant
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said it began a 48-hour reliability test on four new Phase 2 dual-fueled Wärtsilä engines at the Randolph Harley Power Plant on St. Thomas, with the test scheduled to start at about 4 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2024.
WAPA said the engines were designed to run on both light fuel oil diesel and liquid propane gas and were intended to support service in the St. Thomas-St. John district.
The authority said additional generation units would be on standby during the test and that minimal impact on the community was expected.
After the reliability test, WAPA said it planned additional testing on light fuel oil, including a net capacity test on Monday afternoon and a load acceptance test, before beginning commissioning on propane. WAPA said the units' standard operation was expected to consist of 95% LPG and 5% light fuel oil.
