From CNN via USVI News: August’s full moon wasn’t the only spectacle in the night sky Thursday night. The full moon, nicknamed the sturgeon moon, also created a partial lunar eclipse.

The full moon, nicknamed the sturgeon moon, also created a partial lunar eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth aligns between the sun and the moon, causing the Earth’s shadow, or umbra, to darken the moon.

While the event was only a partial lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow covered 96% of the moon’s bright, visible surface.
