A fire broke out at about 1 p.m. on August 1, 2025, in the compressor room of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority garage at the Randolph Harley Power Plant in St. Thomas, according to WAPA.

WAPA said the fire was isolated to an aging air compressor unit and was contained within the compressor room after the facility’s fire wall protections activated.

The incident prompted an evacuation of the facility under emergency procedures. WAPA said everyone on site was evacuated and accounted for. Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services crews extinguished the fire and inspected the facility before it was cleared for re-entry.

No injuries were reported, and WAPA said the fire did not disrupt plant operations or services.

WAPA said its Safety Department and responding emergency units were investigating the cause of the fire and conducting a damage assessment.
