WAPA urged customers to conserve electricity during peak hours amid strain on grid
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on September 17, 2024, that it was asking residents, businesses and community organizations to reduce electricity use to ease strain on the territory’s power grid and help prevent outages.
WAPA said the conservation effort focused on peak-use periods from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The authority said demand on the grid had increased and warned that, if not reduced, the strain could lead to more frequent and widespread outages.
The authority advised customers to limit use of high-energy appliances during peak hours, turn off lights and appliances when not in use, set air conditioners between 75 and 78 degrees, unplug unused electronic devices, delay use of dishwashers, washing machines and dryers until non-peak hours, and wash full loads with cold water when possible.
WAPA also said customer-service hours would remain extended for the following three Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to noon, for billing disputes.
