An islandwide power outage on St. Croix on December 7, 2025, began at about 11:30 a.m. and affected service until the evening, according to the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.
WAPA said the outage was triggered by an unexpected fault involving leased generation from Aggreko at the Richmond Plant. The authority said the initial fault led to cascading equipment problems that were identified over several hours as crews investigated and made repairs.
WAPA said plant personnel believed by 4 p.m. that they had identified the last affected equipment, but within the next hour found additional components that had been stressed and also required repair or replacement. Some customers experienced intermittent service during restoration efforts as the fault repeatedly tripped operating units, the authority said.
Restoration began at 8:10 p.m. with priority customers, and remaining affected customers were restored by 9:15 p.m., according to WAPA.
The authority said the extended outage also disrupted water production. On December 8, 2025, customers in Christiansted and the mid-island area were expected to see water service return by midday, while restoration in Frederiksted was expected to take longer because of significant leaks over the previous two weeks that had depleted inventory.
