The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on September 30, 2024, that a FEMA-funded prudent replacement plan for the St. Thomas-St. John water distribution system had been approved.

WAPA said the plan called for replacing aging pipes, upgrading pump stations and refurbishing storage tanks as part of a broader overhaul of the district’s water distribution system.

According to the authority, the work was intended to improve long-term system durability and reliability and reduce leaks, breaks and other problems affecting drinking water service.

WAPA said the approval followed an earlier approval of a similar plan for the St. Croix district.

The authority also said other federally funded waterline rehabilitation projects had been completed in downtown Christiansted, Frederiksted and Estate Clifton Hill, while projects in Campo Rico and Hannah’s Rest on St. Croix were nearing completion. WAPA said FEMA had also approved projects addressing the past impact of sargassum on St. Croix’s saltwater intake system.
