Government House briefing noted Election Day holiday and outlined Veterans Day events
Government House Communications Director Richard Motta Jr. said in a weekly briefing on November 5, 2024, that Election Day on November 6 would be observed as a legal holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands and that non-essential government offices would be closed.
Motta said essential workers required to work on Election Day were entitled to two hours off with pay to vote, provided they notified their employers in advance.
He also outlined Veterans Day events scheduled across the territory. A pre-Veterans Day ceremony was scheduled for November 10 at 1 p.m. in Cruz Bay, St. John, honoring Vietnam veteran Henry A. Powell. The event was set to proceed from the National Park grounds to the Frank J. Powell Ballpark Bandstand, followed by a concert.
Veterans Day ceremonies were scheduled for November 11 on St. Thomas and St. Croix. On St. Thomas, a 9 a.m. parade was set to begin at Emil Griffith Park and proceed to Emancipation Garden for the official ceremony, where retired Judge Fern A. Hodge was to be honored. On St. Croix, a 3 p.m. parade was scheduled from King Street to Verne I. Richards Memorial Park, followed by a ceremony honoring Wilfred Tuitt.
