WAPA marked 60th anniversary with hurricane-preparedness outreach at three summer camps
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on July 11, 2024, that it had launched a hurricane-preparedness outreach campaign tied to its 60th anniversary, including visits to three summer camps on St. Croix and St. Thomas.
WAPA said it visited Grove Summer Camp and Alternative School Summer Camp on St. Croix, and Handy Spandy Summer Camp on St. Thomas, on July 9 and July 10, 2024.
According to the authority, employees from its safety, information technology and communications teams led activities on hurricane-season preparation for children ages 5 to 12. The sessions included emergency-scenario exercises and a pillowcase emergency-kit drawing activity conducted with the Red Cross, which also provided activity books for students to take home.
WAPA said the outreach was intended to teach children what items are needed in emergencies and how to respond in situations such as evacuation or separation from parents during a storm.
