Karen M. Carty, the athletics director at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), has been awarded the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Athletics Director of the Year. This prestigious recognition was announced during the GCAC’s annual year-end business meeting, held at Philander Smith University in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Carty, a native of St. Croix, was lauded for her exceptional leadership and contributions to UVI’s athletics program. At 40 years old, she has become a prominent figure in the conference, significantly enhancing the visibility and performance of UVI’s athletic teams.

The GCAC, which is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), comprises historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Carty’s award, one of the conference’s “Distinguished Member Awards,” highlights her role in fostering athletic excellence and promoting the university’s values on a national stage.

Under Carty’s leadership, UVI has seen remarkable growth in its athletic programs. Her efforts were instrumental in UVI joining the GCAC, a significant milestone as the university became the first institution from a U.S. territory to join this prestigious HBCU athletic conference. This move aligns with UVI’s strategic goal to provide its student-athletes with greater opportunities for national competition and exposure.

Dr. David Hall, UVI President, praised Carty’s achievement, stating, “Karen’s leadership and vision have been pivotal in elevating our athletic programs. This recognition is well-deserved and underscores her dedication to our students and the broader athletic community.”

Carty’s accolade comes as UVI continues to build on its historic achievements. The university hosted its first-ever HBCU Basketball Classic, showcasing the talent and spirit of HBCU athletics within the Virgin Islands. This event, along with UVI’s growing participation in the GCAC, exemplifies the university’s commitment to embracing and celebrating its HBCU heritage.

GCAC Commissioner Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes expressed her enthusiasm for Carty’s recognition and UVI’s integration into the conference. “Karen’s award is a testament to her hard work and the bright future of UVI Athletics within the GCAC,” said Dr. Barnes. She further noted that the expansion into the Caribbean market through UVI enriches the conference’s diversity and reach.

As Carty continues to lead UVI’s athletic programs, her vision and efforts are expected to bring further successes and opportunities for UVI student-athletes. Her recognition as the GCAC Athletics Director of the Year marks a significant chapter in UVI’s athletic history and sets a high bar for future achievements.
