In a display of skill and youthful vigor, Kruz Schembri, the 17-year-old fencing prodigy from the U.S. Virgin Islands, has impressively clinched a Top-10 position in the Men’s Individual Foil at the 2023 Pan American Games, mere days after celebrating his 17th birthday. This remarkable feat underscores his emerging talent in a field of 19 seasoned competitors.

Schembri’s path to the Pan American Games was forged with his notable performance at the 2022 Pan American Championships in Asuncion, Paraguay. Reflecting on his progress, Schembri said, “Achieving this at 15 was monumental for me. Representing the Virgin Islands is a tremendous honor that fuels my performance in every match and this significant event, as well as those ahead.”

His dedication to fencing is evidenced by a disciplined regimen, balancing his home-schooling commitments with an intense training schedule. He fences thrice weekly, dedicating two hours to each session, and sustains his athletic condition by running an impressive 40-50 miles weekly. Schembri’s commendable track record is maintained on fencingtracker.com under the Masters Fencing Club/Tampa’s Fencing and Tennis Academy, showcasing a notable all-time tally of 929 victories against 259 defeats, reflecting a triumphant ratio of 78.2%.

With an eye on continuous improvement and striving for greater achievements, Schembri is gearing up for the U20 World Cup Season. He shares with palpable enthusiasm, “The season is on the horizon, and I’m prepping for the Junior World Cups through the winter and spring. Plus, the pivotal Olympic Qualifier come April is a significant milestone I’m eagerly anticipating.”
