U.S. Virgin Islands’ Michelle Smith Secures Hat-trick in 400m Hurdles at CARIFTA Games

Michelle Smith, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands, delivered a spectacular performance at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada during the Carifta Games, dominating the U20 Girls 400m hurdles. Smith clocked an impressive 56.28 seconds on Sunday, marking her third consecutive victory in this event and capturing the spotlight with her remarkable speed and agility.

The event was a stage for fierce competition, especially from Jamaica, which saw its athletes winning three out of the four 400m hurdles finals that day. Nastassia Fletcher from Jamaica clinched the gold in the U17 Girls category with a time of 1:00.10, securing her second gold of the competition. Darvinique Dean from the Bahamas and Jenna-Marie Thomas from Trinidad and Tobago followed closely, winning silver and bronze respectively.

The boys’ competitions were equally thrilling. Robert Miller from Jamaica broke the championship record in the Under 17 Boys 400m hurdles, setting a new benchmark at 52.19 seconds. He was followed by Akanye Samuel-Francis from St. Kitts and Nevis and Fransico Williams from Jamaica, who completed the podium.

Jamaica continued its dominance in the Under 20 Boys category, with Shamer Blake taking gold with a time of 51.21 seconds. He was closely followed by fellow Jamaican Princewell Martin and Dorian Charles from Trinidad and Tobago, who finished second and third, respectively.

In the U20 Girls category, alongside Michelle Smith’s victory, Kelly Ann Carr from Jamaica won silver, and Aaliyah Mullings, also from Jamaica, claimed bronze, highlighting the depth of talent in the region.

Smith’s latest triumph at the Carifta Games underscores her exceptional talent and dedication, with five gold medals to her name over three years. Looking forward to her sixth gold, Smith also showcased her prowess in the 800m event, advancing to the finals with a promising time in the semifinals.
