The Chugani and Aswani Family is mourning the loss of Vishnu (Victor) Chugani, who passed away on March 18, 2024. Born in the historical city of Karachi before the partition of India in 1939, Vishnu embarked on an extraordinary journey of 85 years, characterized by his steadfast love for his family and community, alongside a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit.

Vishnu’s story is one of resilience and adventure, starting from the challenges of the Partition, which led his family to seek a new beginning in Pune. His journey of exploration and business acumen took him from Hong Kong to various corners of the world, culminating in his marriage to Indra Chugani in 1964 in Pune. Their partnership blossomed in the United States Virgin Islands, where they established their home and raised their children, Gobind and Sharmila, with love and dedication.

As the founder of the House of Rajah, Vishnu built a jewelry empire that spanned over half a century, reflecting his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence. His contributions extended beyond the realm of business; he was deeply involved in community service and cultural activities. A charter member of the St. Thomas Rotary Club and the India Association of the VI, and a supporter of the United Way and the Chamber of Commerce, Vishnu also co-founded the first Indian Radio Program in the Virgin Islands, significantly enriching the cultural landscape.

Vishnu’s warmth, wisdom, and generosity touched many lives around the world, earning him admiration as a respected advisor and a true gentleman. His devotion was most vivid in his 35-year commitment to caring for his wife, Indra, through her health challenges, showcasing his enduring compassion and love.

He leaves behind a legacy cherished by his children, Gobind & Kusum, Sharmila & Manoj, his grandchildren Alisha, Ashwin, and Shaina, his brothers Mohan, Gulu, and Raju, and a vast network of family and friends. Vishnu’s lessons and stories will continue to inspire and guide those fortunate enough to have known him.

The community will gather to honor Vishnu’s life with funeral services at Turnbull Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, from 8-9 a.m., and Prayer Services at the Indian Cultural Center on Saturday, March 23, from 7-8 a.m. In celebrating Vishnu and Indra’s lives, we remember them with joy, laughter, and love.

Om Shanti.

In remembrance, the family suggests donations to the India Association at P O Box 1267, St. Thomas VI 00804-1267 (Cultural Center).
