Michelle Smith Shines at Florida State Relays, Preps for CARIFTA Games

Emerging as a remarkable talent in the realm of track and field, Michelle Smith has yet again distinguished herself at the recent Florida State Relays in Tallahassee. At just 18, the high school senior not only competed with but triumphed over seasoned college seniors and professional athletes in the 400m hurdles, clocking an impressive time of 56.85 seconds. Dubbed the “school phenom” by an event commentator, Smith lived up to the expectations, clinching first place in the highly competitive event. Representing Celerity Athletics, her performance has added two significant accolades to her burgeoning career.

In addition to her victory in the 400m hurdles, Smith showcased her versatility and prowess in the 100m hurdles within the high school division, securing the top spot with a season-best time of 14.12 seconds.

Her outstanding achievements have positioned her as a formidable competitor at this year’s CARIFTA games, where she, alongside eight fellow Virgin Islands athletes, will represent their training and dedication on the international stage. The contingent is set to depart for Grenada on Thursday, aiming to make a significant impact over the Easter weekend.

Smith will compete in the Female Under 20 category, challenging herself in both the 400m hurdles and the 800m events. Joining her in the quest for athletic glory are athletes like Sofia Swindell, who will take on the 100m hurdles, 200m, and triple jump in the same age category.

The male athletes are equally prepared to showcase their skills. Jayvan Benjamin is set to leap into the long jump event for the Under 17 category. Sprinters Micah Dominique and Juvante Hurst will test their speed in the 100m and 200m races. The Male Under 20 4x400m relay team, consisting of Quemane Bell, Thomas Crikelair, Nathan Langley, and Jaden Stapleton, is ready to demonstrate teamwork and resilience on the track. Additionally, Bell will leap for victory in the long jump, Crikelair will endure the 800m, Langley aims to conquer both the 800m and 1500m, and Stapleton will sprint in the 200m and 400m events.

As these athletes gear up for the CARIFTA games, their performances in Florida underscore the Virgin Islands’ emerging talent and dedication to excellence in track and field.
