Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has taken significant steps this week in ensuring the health and safety of St. Croix residents by launching the final stage of an extensive water testing initiative. This crucial phase, conducted in collaboration with the Water and Power Authority and other local and federal partners, aims to include approximately 80 homes on the island for thorough testing of lead and copper levels in water.

Addressing concerns raised by previous findings, which suggested that initial elevated heavy metal levels might have resulted from inadequate sampling methods or system irregularities, Governor Bryan emphasized proceeding with maximum caution. “Our priority is the safety of every individual,” he stated, outlining plans for further testing at 100 sites, with 20 already identified and an appeal for additional volunteer households.

Governor Bryan specifically called upon residents using the WAPA system, especially those in potentially affected areas, to participate in this important testing process. He reassured the community that, should the upcoming tests show non-detectable levels or readings significantly below the EPA’s action threshold for lead and copper, the current state of emergency on St. Croix would not need extension. “While we’re addressing this situation with the seriousness it demands, we believe the necessary funding is already in place,” he explained.

Further demonstrating his commitment to the island’s well-being, Governor Bryan confirmed ongoing plans to install filtration systems and address issues with corroding pipes and rust-tainted water. He clarified that the discoloration issue is distinct from heavy metal contamination and expressed optimism that the “brown water” problem would start resolving within five to six months. The comprehensive action plan includes cleaning and renovating the water system infrastructure, highlighting the administration’s proactive approach.

In light of the potential lead contamination risk from household plumbing with lead components, Governor Bryan referred to a recently-vetoed bill mandating widespread lead testing. He urged lawmakers to refine the bill’s language, particularly regarding private water systems, while encouraging homeowners to test their water regardless of its source.

In a compassionate move to alleviate the inconvenience caused by the recommended precautionary flushing of water lines, Governor Bryan announced that affected residents would receive a $25 monthly credit on their water bills for three months. This gesture underscores the governor’s dedication to supporting St. Croix’s community through every step of this crucial environmental health initiative.
