Arrest for Aggravated Rape on St. Croix: Suspect in Custody

The Virgin Islands Police Department announced the apprehension of Shawn Alexander, a 40-year-old man accused of aggravated rape, after he surrendered at the Wilbur Francis Command on St. Croix. The arrest follows closely on the heels of a police Wanted Ad issued on Monday.

The charges originate from a complaint filed last Thursday, when a minor and an accompanying adult reported to the Ancilmo D. Marshall Command Police Station. The minor alleged that she had been sexually assaulted and inappropriately touched by Alexander, prompting her to reveal the incident to a household adult.

After turning himself in, Alexander was read his Miranda rights, which he acknowledged, opting, however, to withhold any statement. Following his arrest, he was formally charged with first-degree aggravated rape and had his initial court appearance where bail was set at $150,000. Unable to secure the bail amount, Alexander was detained at the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his upcoming Advice of Rights hearing, which will outline the next steps in his legal process.
