Bryan visited Barbados to review precast concrete housing projects for U.S. Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. visited Barbados to review housing developments and explore precast concrete construction as a possible approach to addressing the U.S. Virgin Islands' housing shortage, according to a Government House statement published April 2, 2024.

During the trip, Bryan toured projects with developer Mark Maloney, including a 40-room condominium, a 1,500-unit low-income affordable housing development and a 500-unit medium-income development, the statement said.

Government House said the projects used precast concrete construction, a method it described as capable of erecting a house structure in one day and completing construction, including furnishing, within 60 days.

The statement said Bryan was interested in exploring precast concrete construction for affordable housing proposals on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. It said the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority was preparing to issue a bid seeking affordable housing proposals, with subsidy funding available for public and affordable housing.

Government House said Bryan and local stakeholders planned follow-up meetings with developers to discuss possible use of precast concrete housing in the territory.
