FEMA awarded U.S. Virgin Islands $232.9 million for STEP program costs

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the U.S. Virgin Islands $232,919,518 to cover costs tied to the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority’s Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power Pilot Program, Government House said on December 30, 2019.

The STEP program ended in April 2019. It was created to allow residents to remain in their homes while temporary repairs were made. Government House said the new FEMA funding would be used primarily to reimburse contractors who participated in STEP repairs after Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Government House said the program had been replaced by the EnVision Tomorrow Housing Recovery Repair Program for homes and rental units, which provides federal funding to qualified residents for permanent storm-related repairs.

According to the statement, the Bryan administration said some details still had to be resolved with FEMA before contractor payments could be made.
