Virgin Islands issues $4 million in additional income tax refunds

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue paid an additional $4 million in income tax refunds on Sept. 5, 2019, according to Government House.

The payment covered about 1,500 refunds for tax year 2016 and applied to returns filed through April 18, 2017.

Internal Revenue Bureau Director Joel Lee said the release did not include all returns filed on the April 18, 2017 deadline and said those refunds would be issued in the next release. He said refunds were processed and issued based on the date the return was filed.

Government House said the administration had paid $21.4 million in income tax refunds to more than 9,300 filers as of Sept. 5, 2019. That total included $19.3 million in refunds and $2.1 million in interest.

Lee said residents included in the latest round should already have started receiving their checks.
