Bryan met with federal officials on Salt River visitor center proposal
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. met on June 5, 2019, at Government House with Assistant Secretary of Insular Affairs Douglas Domenech and National Park Service Deputy Director Dan Smith to discuss a proposal to upgrade the visitor center at Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve.
Government House said Bryan was reviewing an agreement between the Virgin Islands government and the National Park Service for construction of a new visitor center at Salt River. The proposal would create a joint venture between the National Park Service and the Virgin Islands government.
Government House said art and artifacts that had been kept at Salt River before the 2017 hurricanes would be returned to the new facility. A small collection was on display at Fort Christiansvaern, while other items were being held by the Danish government until the Salt River project was completed.
During the meeting, Bryan also asked the Office of Insular Affairs and the National Park Service for assistance in expanding opportunities for children in the territory to visit Buck Island Reef National Monument.
Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve was created by Congress in 1992 and is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Virgin Islands government, according to Government House.
