Bryan, VIPD officials visited New York to review policing technology and violence-reduction model

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. traveled to New York City in the week before Aug. 24, 2021, with Virgin Islands Police Department Commissioner nominee Ray Martinez, Sen. Steven Payne Sr., Peace Officer Standards and Training Executive Director Gleston McIntosh and senior VIPD officers to meet with public officials and tour New York Police Department facilities, Government House said.

According to the Aug. 24 statement, the delegation visited the NYPD's Real Time Crime Center to review crime-fighting technology and discuss how law enforcement agencies can use limited personnel strategically. Government House said the center had access to more than 50,000 cameras in New York City and used software that could track vehicles and provide officers with real-time information tied to prior crimes, arrests and known associates.

The statement said VIPD and the Bureau of Information Technology were overseeing a first phase installation of 104 cameras with license-plate reading and facial-recognition technology across the territory. It said 46 cameras had been installed and were online as of Aug. 24, 2021.

The delegation also met with the National Network for Safe Communities to discuss its group-violence reduction and intervention model, according to Government House. The administration said that model would form the foundation of the planned Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the governor's Advisory Council on Community Violence Intervention.

Government House said the Office of the Governor and the Department of Personnel were recruiting for the director of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, with applications scheduled to close on Sept. 1, 2021.
