WAPA opened applications for 2024 Alva C. McFarlane scholarships
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on February 2, 2024, that it was accepting applications for its 2024 Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship Program through February 26, 2024.
The program was open to graduating high school seniors and freshman and sophomore college students enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, engineering programs, including the University of the Virgin Islands' 3-2 engineering program.
WAPA said the scholarship offered up to $60,000 in financial assistance for bachelor's degree students and up to $20,000 for associate's or technical degree students in electrical engineering technology, electronics engineering or related fields. Scholarships in each category were offered by district.
According to the authority, applicants had to be U.S. citizens and Virgin Islands residents with no criminal record. Selection criteria included academic achievement, standardized college admission test scores, community involvement and a panel interview. UVI applicants had to be accepted into or enrolled in the university's engineering program to qualify.
WAPA said eligible expenses included tuition, room and board, books, fees and supplies.
