Bryan ended beach curfew and eased restaurant spacing rules, announced finance nominee

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during a Government House press briefing on April 19, 2021, that the Virgin Islands would lift the curfew at territorial beaches beginning April 23.

The beach curfew had required beaches to close by 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Bryan said restrictions on grilling, DJs, live or amplified music, social distancing and mass gatherings would remain in effect.

Bryan also said restaurants would be allowed to place tables 4 feet apart.

At the same briefing, Bryan announced Bosede Bruce as his nominee to lead the Virgin Islands Department of Finance. Government House said Bruce, a St. John native, had been serving as comptroller for Echelon Property & Casualty Insurance Company in Chicago.

Bryan also offered condolences following the territory's 27th COVID-19 death. Government House said that, as of April 16, the Health Department was tracking 51 active cases: 23 on St. Croix, 27 on St. Thomas and one on St. John.

Government House said 94,697 people had been tested, 3,041 had tested positive, 2,963 had recovered, and three patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 at Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix, with none hospitalized at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas.

The administration also said community vaccination centers would relocate on May 10, with the St. Croix site moving to the Nissan Building in Christiansted and the St. Thomas site moving to the Community Health Clinic on the second floor of Schneider Regional Medical Center.
