Bryan urged residents to prepare as storm system approached U.S. Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said at a press conference on July 28, 2020, that residents should prepare for a weather system approaching the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico that was expected to become a tropical storm on July 29, 2020.

V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency Director Daryl Jaschen said sand and sandbags would not be distributed because of the risk of gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said curfew passes were available by appointment only and required a 10-day processing period.

Jaschen said that if a curfew was imposed, only people directly involved in emergency response or life-saving functions should be on the roads.

Human Services Commissioner Kimberley Causey-Gomez said congregate shelters would not be opened for the weather event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bryan also said he had submitted a request for a federal disaster declaration ahead of the approaching storm system and urged residents to sign up for Alerts VI, assemble emergency supplies and check on relatives and neighbors.
